Midnight Peg
Edmonton, Canada
About
Commanding the stage with explosive intensity, Midnight Peg’s scorching take on punk rock demands attention. Featuring veterans of amiskwacîwâskahikan/ Edmonton’s vibrant music scene, this powerhouse is as well-versed in melodic post-hardcore as they are in avant-garde post-punk, delivering a passion for their craft that is contagious.
The band’s climactic, genre-crossing performance has quickly earned them a diverse and loyal following. Midnight Peg dominated lineups at festivals, such as Sled Island, Hi-Lite, Massif, Winterruption and Purple City, sharing the stage with power femme-punk and darkwave acts such as Pleasure Venom & Bonnie Trash, and France’s psychedelic krautrock trio Meule. Over the past year, Midnight Peg provided direct support for punk rock legends D.O.A and toured Western Canada with Pussy Riot.
Their self-released debut album, Horn Colic showcases Midnight Peg’s bizarre intuition. Short, catchy songs fuse the subversive aggression of Queercore and Riot Grrrl movements with the heartfelt, post-hardcore soundscape of the decade that followed. Their highly-anticipated sophomore album maintains this delicious aggression while embracing moments of their more experimental and atmospheric post-punk noise sensibilities.
The result: sonic blister then mess of fluid. Melodically distorted riffs, heavy-driving drums, thick bass and thoughtful, frenzied vocals raise as many eyebrows as fists. As Cups N’ Cakes writer Drew Cox says, “It slices, it dices, it feels vital. It feels great. Like a welcome slap to the face. You know you needed it.”
